Un désert au coeur du monde/ A Desert in the Heart of the World

------

Showcasing over 120 photographs taken over the course of the four seasons, both in colour and black-and-white, A Desert in the Heart of the World traces the footprints of the Carthusian monks throughout the region surrounding the Grande Chartreuse. Crosses, chapels and clearings, iron mines, tilt hammers and forges – these are the visible relics from the  many centuries of the monks’ presence. From the ancient distillery to the ruined bridges, old paths and new roads… all bear witness to the close relationship between man and nature, the secular and the spiritual, the everyday and the sacred.

These photographs of fragments scattered across the landscape provide intriguing clues to the sweeping legacy of this religious order. Several of the images focus on both the abundant water and the verdant forest, two key resources of the community that have, over the centuries, played a central role in the reputation and development of the monastery. Other photographs, more abstract, taken in close-up or bathed in a hazy darkness, reveal a hidden and secret world, reminiscent of the order itself, which every year continues to captivate and fascinate visitors to the Chartreuse mountains.

The Clinic - Glasgow International

The Clinic
Friday 8 April – Monday 25 April
Private view: Saturday 9 April 6-9pm

The Clinic is a multi-sensory and interactive exhibition exploring pseudo-sciences and the diverse ideas that surround them.

Often derided as inconsequential and self-indulgent, psychoanalysis has been an intriguing resource for artists, art critics and historians throughout the twentieth century. There are many other forms of pseudo-sciences or alternative therapies that investigate the interconnection between the body, mind, and psyche, such as meditation, reflexology, light therapy, hypnotherapy, etc.

Using these alternative treatments in a playful and engaging manner, the artists behind the Clinic have created a dynamic space that draws in participants to situations and immersive environments. Visitors will be welcomed by staff in a waiting room, where they can 'relax' and take a refreshment in anticipation of their ‘therapy’. They will be then invited to explore the exhibition, unknowingly stepping into an on-going performance questioning their idea of perception, reality and fantasy.

During their journey, visitors will encounter meditative and restorative installations such as reflexology beds, hypnotic films with repetitive patterns that are echoed in sculptural works and multi sensory tactile installations.

Participating artists are Nadège Druzkowski, Jenny Lewis, Philippe Murphy, Alys Owen and Beth Shapeero. They all graduated from the Mlitt in Fine Art Practice from The Glasgow School of Art (2012) and have a recorded history of staging shows together in Scotland and abroad. Artists from

The Clinic will take part in ‘The Dust of Everyday Life’, a one-day symposium on the arts and mental health programmed by the Mental Health Foundation on 20 April at the CCA (Centre for Contemporary Arts).

The show is supported by the Mental Health Foundation and Clyde Gateway.

Exhibition details:

Waves - Summerhall

A short video by Curators Iga Bozyk and Patrycja Godulaga introducing the show Waves at the Summerhall, Edinburgh where I exhibit a few paintings.

The exhibition showcases Polish artists and artists of Polish ancestry at different stages of their artistic practice working with various media — photography, written word, painting, installation, collage and film.

Waves are a metaphor for constant movement and influx of Polish talent to the British shores. It is connected with, but not exclusive to, the latest wave of migration that started in 2004 when Poland joined the EU. Over the centuries the UK has experienced an inflow of distinct skill, expertise, creativity and innovation from this Central European country, which has greatly contributed to the British art and culture.

Whether inherited through blood bonds or freshly from the Fatherland the most vibrant, new wave of contemporary Polish talent is being showcased in this PCAO exhibition in the hope of making waves in the Western art world.

Un Désert au Coeur du Monde/ A Desert in the Heart of the World - TEASER

Un Désert au Coeur du Monde (Teaser) from Nadege Druzkowski on Vimeo.

A Desert in the Heart of the World
« A Desert in the Heart of the World » is a short art film whose narrative attempts to reveal how the Chartreux monks shaped the landscape of the Chartreuse mountains over several centuries.
This contemplative religious order, living in almost complete silence, has been based in this part of the French Alps from as far back as the XIth century. The documentary centres on the two main resources of the neighbouring community, the abundant water and verdant forest, within whose shadow we follow the mottled trail left in the landscape: veins of iron ore; the old forges; clearings and barns; marshes; a former distillery; the old trails and new roads.
These footprints in the landscape exist not just as clues of the powerful relationship between man and nature, but also of that between the monks and the rest of the society, near and far. Holding these memories of a rich history, the land seems suspended like a dream space, a place in which the march of time dissolves, where the existence, the experience of man merges with that of nature in the eternal passage of time.

Programmed as part of Glasgow International 2014
A disused Underground Car Park under Fleming House tower in Glasgow’s City Centre imagines it was a Swimming Pool in an alternate history. Subverted through a vision of a past non-existent utopia, the Car Park becomes a doorway to another world, twice removed from its current status of abandonment. The exhibition is an overall transformation of this immersive space into a body of a Swimming Pool, with works by six artists (Druzkowski, Kubba, Lewis, Murphy, Owen and Shapeero)that explore the idea of “Other Spaces” on the one hand, and react to the transformation of the Car Park on the other.

“The apparent absence of a social structure; the timelessness of a world beyond boredom, with no past, no future and a diminishing present. Perhaps this was what a leisure-dominated future would resemble? Nothing could ever happen in this affectless realm, where entropic drift calmed the surfaces of a thousand swimming pools.”

J G Ballard, Cocaine Nights

The introduction of a fictional past (swimming pool) to an existing heterotopic space (underground car park) harkens to the utopian origin of modernist residential towers, where open spaces freed up by the piling up of apartments, were envisioned as places for leisure and recreation. The abandoned Car Park highlights the abandonment of otherwise profitable urban spaces due to the current economic conditions; while the fictional pool is both a comment on the lack of non-commercial public spaces in the City Centre, and the dissolution of the follies of modernist housing.
